Claim tips
What to do after property damage.
Seven simple steps that help protect your home and your claim.
Seven steps
Make sure everyone is safe
Call 911 for an emergency, and stay out of any area that is unsafe. Your safety comes before your property.
Stop more damage from happening
Cover openings, shut off the water if it is safe to, and remove standing water if you can. Keep receipts for what you spend.
Document everything before you clean up
Take photos and video of every room, wide and close, before you move or throw anything away.
Read your policy
Look for your deductible and for the deadline to report a claim. If you can’t find your policy, your insurer can send you a copy.
Report the loss
Tell your insurance company promptly. Write down the claim number and the date, time and name of every call.
Pause before you sign or accept a first offer
Early paperwork and quick offers can limit what you are paid. Get a second opinion on what the damage is worth first.
Ask for a free inspection and policy review
We will look at the damage, read your policy and tell you where you stand, at no cost to you.
General information only, not legal advice. Policies and deadlines differ, so check your own policy.
